Indonesia Masters: Letshaana breaks 3-year record after securing semis berth

Letshanaa

K.Letshanaa became the first Malaysian women’s singles shuttler to reach a World Tour top-tier semi-finals in three years after she won in straight games at the Indonesia Masters on Friday.

The world number 42 made history for herself after she convincingly beat Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yu-hsun 21-17, 21-18 in 40-minutes for her best outing in a high-level event so far.

It could be even better for Letshaana if she overcomes Thailand’s Pitchamon Opatniputh in the semis on Saturday, a prospect that looks promising for the Malaysian based on how she’s faring so far.

Against Huang, Letshaana again dominated proceedings. She was quicker, more daring and ultimately more clinical than her opponent to secure the win, just as she has done in her previous two matches.

For the record, Goh Jin Wei was the last Malaysian women’s singles player to reach the last four of a Super 500 event and above, when she made the Hong Kong Open semis back in 2023.

It was a good day in the office for the rest of the Malaysian contingent who are competing at the Istora Senayan stadium.

Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and top seeded national women’s pair Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah will also see action on Saturday after winning their matches in straight games.
