India Open organizers dismiss poor court conditions allegations

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) have defended the organization of the Super 750 event, and promised to be prepared to host the World Championships in August.

On Wednesday, Danish shuttler Mia Blichfeldt lamented the conditions of the warm-up court, saying there were birds flying around and pooping on the court, while her national team-mate Antonsen said he pulled out for the third consecutive time due to severe pollution in New Delhi.

BAI general-secretary Sanjay Mishra, however, dismissed the claims made by both shuttlers, saying the other coaches and players have praised the India Open organization.

On Blichfeldt’s claims, Mishra said: “Mia has some issues with dust and allergies; we can't say anything about it.

On Antonsen pulling out, the official said “He can't comment on the conditions here while sitting in Denmark. His reason for withdrawal was not accepted by the BWF and he was fined.

Mishra also said the organizers have installed additional heaters to cope with the cold weather, and promised to adhere to the world body’s guidelines for hosting the World Championships.

Indian shuttler K.Srikanth and current world number two Kunlavut Vitidsarn were among those who said they are happy with the court conditions.

It is worth pointing out that four pairs conceded a walkover in Wednesday’s first round action, including world number one men’s doubles pair Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae.
