🚨 | "𝐖𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏..." SBS has reported that Hwang Hee-chan, Hwang In-beom and Kim Min-jae have differed in views with capt Son Heung-min and have demanded "changes in leadership" and have been frustrated with nothing happening resulting in long standing tensions that have finally erupted with the three players born in 96 contemplating early retirement from the team. Here is the complete translation of the SBS story so nothing gets lost out of context: SBS: "Although captain Son Heung-min set a new all-time national team goalscoring record last night (October 6), the mood surrounding the South Korean national team was far from celebratory. That was because of a controversy involving three players born in 1996 — Hwang In-beom, Kim Min-jae, and Hwang Hee-chan — who were reportedly considering retiring from international football. It appears that long-running tensions within the national team have finally boiled over. Reporter Ha Sung-ryong reports. Even after scoring his 59th international goal to set a new record for the most goals by a South Korean male player, Son Heung-min could not simply smile brightly. Son Heung-min / South Korea captain: “It’s true that the atmosphere [within the national team] was heavy. But from my perspective, I actually think that’s a good sign. It shows how much everyone cares about this team.” His comments were an indirect acknowledgment of the team’s recent difficult atmosphere. In fact, despite South Korea’s 2–0 victory, Hwang In-beom sat down on the pitch and shed tears for some time. Shortly afterward, rumors began circulating that Hwang, Kim Min-jae, and Hwang Hee-chan — all born in 1996 — were considering retiring from the national team together. Hwang In-beom / South Korea midfielder: “A wise person also knows when it is right to let go. [As for whether I’m selected for the national team in November], I think that is now something for the manager to decide.” Regarding the unexpected “retirement controversy” involving several of the team’s key players, multiple sources told SBS that “long-standing tensions have finally erupted.” From the “private treatment room controversy” at the Qatar World Cup four years ago, to the physical altercation between players during the 2024 Asian Cup, and most recently the interview boycott surrounding the North and Central America World Cup, disagreements repeatedly emerged during these conflicts and the attempts to resolve them. According to the sources, captain Son Heung-min and some of the other players held differing views over how these situations were handled. As the players born in 1996 grew into senior members of the squad, they repeatedly called for “changes in leadership,” but became increasingly frustrated because they felt nothing was changing. Kim Min-jae’s actions and comments following the recent match against Venezuela are also being interpreted within this context. Kim Min-jae / South Korea defender (October 2): “Everyone needs to fight together, compete for the ball together, and defend together, but I don’t think we’re doing that very well right now. Honestly, when I look at the defenders, I feel sorry for them.” Eventually, Hyun Young-min, chairman of the National Team Strengthening Committee, held discussions with the three players that continued past midnight, bringing the immediate “retirement controversy” to an end. However, Hwang Hee-chan and Hwang In-beom departed the country today without providing any clear explanation when questioned about the situation. Hwang Hee-chan / South Korea midfielder: Reporter: “Has anything been decided regarding the talk about retiring from the national team?” Hwang: “Nothing has been decided, so…” With the underlying issues appearing to have been temporarily patched over rather than genuinely resolved, the national team now moves forward with what amounts to a ticking time bomb — uncertain when these tensions might erupt again."
