Malaysia Open: Aaron-Wooi Yik, Wei Chong-Kai Wun earn crucial wins

National men's doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun saved Malaysia's blushes on a day which saw several representatives crash out of the Malaysia Open second round on Thursday.

Second seeds Chia-Soh overcame Chinese pair Chen Xu Jun-Liu Yang 21-14, 14-21, 21-14 at the same time which Man-Tee beat Japanese pair Hiroki Midorikawa-Kyohei Yamashita 21-9, 21-15.

Both pairs victories' gave the strong turnout at the Axiata Arena something to cheer about, after they witnessed several defeats from the Malaysian contingent earlier.

Among the high-profile losses came from national women's pair Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah, who were tamed 24-26, 17-21 by Indonesian pair Febriana Kusuma-Meilysa Puspitasari.

Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin were another disappointment after they fell to a tame 13-21, 17-21 defeat against English pair Ben Lane-Sean Vendy.

Other results saw Leong Jun Hao lose 18-21, 11-21 against Jonatan Christie, while Yap Roy King-Junaidi Arif lost 18-21, 11-21 against India's Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy.

In the earlier session, world champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei overcame national team-mates Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin 21-13, 23-21 to book a place in the quarter-finals.

They will now next face Hong Kong pair Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet.
