Fans reject BWF 15x3 proposed scoring system, call for VAR

Fans have voiced their displeasure at the latest proposal by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to change the current scoring format to 15x3 points.

The world body, in a statement, said the proposal will be put to a membership vote at the BWF Annual General Meeting on April 25.

Fans took to the BWF social media channels to disagree with the new scoring system proposal.

Most agreed to stick with the current 21x3 scoring format, as it keeps the matches exciting, gives shuttlers enough time to change strategies mid-match and allows for a more balanced duel.

Some felt the new proposed 15x3 points will heavily side with attacking players and will shorten duration of matches.

Some also weighed in with their own suggestions on how to further improve the sport, including implementing Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system for players to challenge decisions such as net fault,  racquet touch and body touch.

For the record, the new 15x3 points has already been trialed at Grade 3 events such as the International Challenge and International Series tournaments, and more recently the 2025 World Junior Championships.

BWF president Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul in a statement said: “We believe the 15x3 scoring system provides a strong foundation for the sport’s future.

“It supports player welfare, keeps matches dynamic and engaging for global audiences, and helps badminton stand out in an increasingly fast-paced entertainment landscape.”

For the record, in 2021, the BWF proposed to change the scoring system to 11x5, but it was unanimously rejected by its members.

In that vote, 187 voted for the current 21x3 scoring system to be retained out of 282 votes casted.

The current 21x3 scoring system has been used since 2006.
