Chong Wei launches LCW Cup to help BAM discover young talents

Lee Chong Wei has one firm goal in mind as he launched his maiden self-titled competition called the Lee Chong Wei Cup (LCWC).

"I want to help the Badminton Association of Malaysia discover more young talents through the LCWC. There wasn't many youth tournaments during my days and I hope this tournament  will provide an opportunity for the young talents," said the former world number one at the LCWC launch at Academy Badminton Malaysia on Thursday.

Lee said he took his time to launch his own competition as he wanted it to fall at the right time.

"It's not easy to organize a private tournament like this, because firstly you need a sponsor. I was fortunate that Chery (Malaysia) decided to come onboard as sponsor and Datuk Stuart Ramalingam from SportsIntel helped me to organize this event. This is my dream to organize a tournament for junior players, because there are not many junior tournaments currently. This is also my time to give back to my country," added the 43-year-old, who also explained why he decided to initiate a junior competition as opposed to a tournament for established shuttlers.

"Firstly the current calendar is packed for the professional circuit, and there isn't a window for the shuttlers to play in. But more importantly, it is my mission to to search for young talents. I want to discover as many young prospects as possible."

The LCWC will start off with a qualifying phase followed by the Grand Finals.

It will feature the Under-13, Under-15 & Under-17 categories with all five disciplines from men's singles to mixed doubles being contested.

The LCWC offers a prize purse of RM100,000 which is the largest prize pool for a youth competition.

Even more enticing is the fact the winners will have an opportunity to have a trial at the Academy Badminton Malaysia.

Further details on the LCWC, including the tournament date and venue will be announced soon.
