Lee Zii Jia has been offered the opportunity to return and train at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) for the upcoming Thomas Cup, and Stadium Astro lists down three reasons why he should take it.

Sparring with Jun Hao & Justin

At present, Lee, Leong Jun Hao and Justin Hoh can be grouped together in the same level. While the Paris Olympics bronze medalist previously fared much better than his compatriots, that is no longer the case after Lee was hit with numerous injuries setback and loss of form.

So returning to the ABM and sparring with both Leong and Hoh on a consistent basis, for at least a month right up to the Thomas Cup next month would be ideal for Lee.

He would get quality match intensity sessions, build camaraderie with his new team-mates and significantly boost his confidence ahead of the Thomas Cup action.

Expert coaching consultation

If Lee returns to ABM for this short stint, he will also benefit from world-class consultation from national singles head coach Kenneth Jonassen, and also former world number one Lee Chong Wei.

Truth is, Lee is in desperate need of wise council.

He is clearly facing a confidence crisis having crashed out in the qualifying rounds of the Swiss Open and Orleans Masters.

The world number 86 also has to endure the pain of seeing his competitors compete in top-tier events on a regular basis, while he desperately tries to rebuild his career from the bottom.

The experience and support from Jonassen and Chong Wei could be crucial in reviving Lee’s career.

Sufficient time to prepare for the Thomas Cup

Should Lee decide to return to the ABM soon, he will have a solid month to not only prepare with national squad, but acclimatize himself to the team ahead of the Thomas Cup which starts on April 24.

Lee has not qualified for the Asian Championships (April 7-12), and so he will have a longer period to prepare for the team event.

This will allow him to also access the world class facilities and support service at ABM to boost his preparation.
