Independent Malaysian shuttler Goh Jin Wei put good use to her free time as she revealed about manning a dessert stall at a night market.

Goh, slated to compete at the upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA) this month, manned the ice jelly stall at the Taman Connaught night market with the help of her dad and his friend.

“My dad operates a stall in the morning and night market, and it is the stall that raised me. It is not an easy industry as he has to prepare the ingredients days before, and it's hard labour to stand throughout the opening hours.

“Of course, I had some of my fans who bought the ice jelly and took pictures with me. It was a great experience and I am looking forward to doing it again,” said Goh, who amassed RM618 in sales in her debut dessert venture.

The two-time world junior champion would get down to serious business when she represents Penang at the SUKMA scheduled for September 20-24 at the Axiata Arena.

The 22-year-old is able to compete at the SUKMA after the organisers raised the age limit from 21 to 23 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that blighted the competition for four years.

Goh became the youngest ever badminton singles champion in the competition when she delivered gold at the age of 14 eight years ago.

She went through a tumultuous period in recent times, having initially retired last year due to a stomach ailment before returning as a professional earlier this year.

She did well so far despite the circumstances, making the last eight of the Commonwealth Games in her last tournament where she pushed India’s P.V. Sindhu in three close games before bowing out.
