Gabriel Gilbert Daim and Syafiq Puteh won their first Commonwealth Games medal after finishing second in the men's three-metre springboard final on Thursday.

The Malaysian duo registered 376.77 points from six dives to edge ahead of Australia's Samuel Fricker and Shixin Li (374.52 points) at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre,

2022 World Aquatics Championships silver medal-winning pair Anthony Harding and Jack Laugher met expectations to win the gold medal as they were the only ones to cross the 400-point mark.

The other competing Malaysian pair, Ooi Tze Liang and Chew Yi Wei, initially topped the standings after the first dive and later stayed in contention for a medal finish, but a botched fifth dive led them to finish second last with 366.09 points.

Gabriel and Syafiq's success was also Malaysia's first diving medal in the 2022 edition, after Pandelela Rinong only managed to finish 11th in the women's 10m platform event.

They would be in action again on Monday, albeit with different partners.

For the mixed synchronised three-metre springboard final, taking place for the first time at the Commonwealth Games, Gabriel teams up with Ng Yan Yee and Syafiq gets paired with Nur Dhabitah Sabri.
