Ecuador will play at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after Chile's appeal over Ecuadorean defender Byron Castillo's eligibility was dismissed by the world's governing body.

The Football Federation of Chile (ANFP) had alleged Castillo, who made eight appearances during the South American qualifying stage, was born in Colombia in 1995 in contrary to his official documents provided by the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF).

"Having analysed the submissions of all parties and after a hearing had been conducted, the Appeal Committee confirmed the decision of the Disciplinary Committee to close the proceedings initiated against the FEF," FIFA said in a statement.

"Amongst other considerations, it deemed that on the basis of the documents presented, the player was to be considered as holding permanent Ecuadorean nationality in accordance with the FIFA Regulations Governing the Application of the Statutes," said an official statement.

Chile confirmed it would appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

"The footballing world heard a player who helped Ecuador qualify for the FIFA World Cup admit he was born in Colombia and that he gained an Ecuadorian passport using false information. What does it say about Appeal Committee that confronted with all this still they fail to act?" said ANFP secretary-general Jorge Yunge.

"Of course, we will refer this to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) because the weight of evidence is clear and we urge the Appeal Committee to deliver the grounds of the decision very quickly because there were enough unjustifiable delays and postponements in this case."

Ecuador are in Group A at the World Cup alongside Qatar, Senegal and the Netherlands.
